10.6 Material

Continued advances in materials are crucial to the design and manufacturing of airframe and propulsion in modern aircraft. The metallic structure requires properties such as mechanical strength, durability, damage tolerance, safety and fatigue, and corrosion resistance. There is an increasing usage of composite materials for airframe applications as a substitute for metallic material due to advantages of lightweight, fatigue, and corrosion resistance, and possessing tailorable mechanical strength and stiffness. However, the two drawbacks of composite materials are cost and long‐term maintainability and reparability. This section details the relevant standards on existing specifications for materials in aircraft [86].
